Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to questions about couples therapy, scheduling, pricing, and how the process works.

How long does couples therapy typically take? +

The duration varies based on your specific concerns and goals. Most couples benefit from 12-20 sessions, though some may need fewer or more. We'll discuss this in your initial session and adjust as needed. The goal is to equip you with skills and understanding for ongoing growth.

Do you accept insurance? +

Yes, Counseling with A Purpose works with various insurance plans. Please visit the Practice Information section to see our accepted insurances, or contact the practice directly to verify whether your specific insurance is accepted and to understand your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.

What if we're not sure if therapy is right for us? +

That's completely normal. The first session is a great opportunity to explore whether therapy feels like a good fit. We'll discuss your concerns, answer your questions, and help you decide if proceeding makes sense for your relationship. There's no pressure—we focus on what's best for you.

What if my partner doesn't want to come? +

I specialize in couples therapy where both partners attend. However, if one partner is initially reluctant, that's worth exploring. Sometimes individual sessions can help clarify whether couples work is the right next step. Feel free to reach out and discuss your specific situation—many couples start with one partner hesitant and find their way to couples work.

Are sessions held in-person or virtually? +

Counseling with A Purpose provides services in North Carolina and South Carolina (virtually) for adults, adolescents, families, and groups. Please contact the practice to learn about their current session formats and options available for your specific needs and circumstances.

What if I need help between sessions? +

During your therapy, we'll discuss how to reach out if you're in crisis. For routine questions between sessions, you can contact Counseling with A Purpose through the Client Portal. In emergencies, please contact 911 or your local emergency services.

How much does the initial session cost? +

The initial session/clinical assessment is $220. Follow-up sessions are $110–$195 for 45–55 minute individual sessions. Group therapy sessions are $60. For detailed pricing information and payment options, visit the Practice Information section or contact Counseling with A Purpose directly.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)? +

EFT is an evidence-based approach developed by Dr. Sue Johnson specifically for couples. It focuses on understanding the emotional patterns that drive conflict and helps couples move from distressed, disconnected patterns toward secure emotional connection. What is attachment and how does it affect my relationship? +

Attachment is the way you relate to your partner in intimate relationships. Developed through early experiences, your attachment style influences how you seek closeness, respond to conflict, and express needs. Understanding your attachment style—and your partner's—is key to building a more secure connection. For a detailed exploration of attachment styles, visit Understanding Attachment Styles.

How do I schedule an appointment? +

Scheduling is simple and done through the secure Client Portal. Visit the Schedule Your Appointment page for step-by-step instructions on how to access the portal, book your time, complete intake paperwork, and confirm your appointment.

What should I bring to my first session? +

Please bring a valid photo ID, insurance card (if applicable), a list of any current medications, and any relevant mental health history. Most importantly, bring an open mind and willingness to engage. For more details, see What to Expect: Your First Session.

What is the cancellation policy? +

Please cancel at least 24 hours in advance. A $75 fee applies for no-shows or cancellations with less than 24 hours notice. Clients who miss two consecutive appointments will be placed in inactive status. For more information, contact Counseling with A Purpose or see the Practice Information section.
