How to Get Started
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel uncertain. Here's a clear, straightforward process for beginning your couples therapy journey.
Make Initial Contact
Reach out to me through email, phone, or the contact form on my website. You don't need to have everything figured out—just let me know you're interested in couples therapy.
Ways to reach me:
Initial Consultation (15-20 minutes)
We'll have a brief phone or video call to discuss your situation. I'll ask about:
- What's bringing you to therapy right now?
- Are both partners willing to participate?
- Your scheduling preferences and availability
- Insurance or payment questions
This is also your chance to ask any questions about my approach, EFT, or what to expect from therapy.
Schedule First Session
If we both feel like a good fit, we'll schedule your first full couples therapy session (50-60 minutes). I offer:
- Virtual (video) sessions - Convenient from home
- In-person sessions - For NC, SC, and VA residents
- Flexible scheduling - Evenings and some weekends available
First Session: Assessment & Goal Setting
In your first full session, we'll:
- Explore your relationship history and current challenges
- Clarify what you hope to achieve through therapy
- Explain my approach and how EFT works
- Answer any questions you have
This session helps us establish rapport and develop a treatment plan tailored to your relationship's unique needs.
Ongoing Therapy & Progress
We'll typically meet weekly or bi-weekly. The length of therapy varies—most couples benefit from 12-20 sessions, though some need more or less depending on their specific situation.
Throughout therapy, you'll:
- Identify and interrupt negative patterns
- Access deeper emotions and needs
- Develop new ways of connecting and responding to each other
- Build secure emotional attachment
Important Notes
- • Both partners should participate: Couples therapy works best when both partners are present and engaged. If only one partner is willing, individual therapy may be a first step.
- • Early engagement is crucial: Showing up consistently, being open to the process, and communicating honestly will accelerate your progress.
- • Confidentiality is guaranteed: Everything shared in therapy is protected by law and professional ethics.
